Commission 1
|
London-based artist Jayne Lloyd began work on the first commission of the River Colne Sculpture Trail in Autumn 2006. Jayne grew up in Golcar, so she has a strong connection to the Colne Valley and has always been keen to create a sculpture to reflect the area's unique history and landscape. Jayne looked at how the valley's mills have changed from being places of work into places to live. She ran workshops with local primary schools and community groups, to develop ideas for the sculpture. Jayne's design for the sculpture incorporates various elements related to the mills, including dressmaking patterns and the play of light from the windows.

'I will investigate how mills, which I largely remember as being derelict and older generations will recall as places of work, are now increasingly being turned into apartments. I am fascinated by how the role of these buildings has changed and by the history that they carry.' Jayne Lloyd, September 2006

Installation The sculpture has been successfully installed next to the canal in Slaithwaite. The project wishes to thank British Waterways for all their help with the installation.
